Underbite Reconstruction and Rehabilitation - Santa Monica
Face Lift Dentistry
Underbites and overbites can occur for a variety of reasons. Genetics, developmental growth patterns, trauma, disease and untreated or delayed treatment for malocclusions that arise from normal wear and tear on our teeth are some of the more popular causes.
For most patients though, as they enter or continue to enjoy adulthood, they just want sensible solutions for something they don't care to have.
For young people, traditional orthodontics is the popular solution. Initiated during the developmental years, orthodontists implement a variety of treatments to produce the adjustments and final bite characteristics that are considered normal and optimal as the young patient reaches dental maturity.
For adults however... while the condition may be identical or somewhat the same... the treatment choices however are not.
Many adults choose not to undergo orthodontic treatment because of the unappealing treatment devices. Invisible Orthodontics, which now includes Invisalign and OrthoClear, offer great treatment choices for adults seeking mild straightening solutions without being required to wear old fashioned metal braces.
The clear aligners created by OrthoClear and Invisalign don't always work however for certain malocclusion conditions.
Our patient, an active young adult who had an underbite problem who didn't care for traditional treatments, was interested in creating a normal occlusion result.
Her goals were well defined. She wanted normal jaw positioning, a great bite and dental function that would enable her to eat anything she wanted and to have a great smile. All with no braces and no surgery.
Collapsed Bite - Vertical Dimension
Our first and second preop pictures show the degree of occlusal relationship problems. Her mandible (lower jaw) was moving forward and causing her mouth and lips to close with less height. Her teeth were not achieving a normal resting position. Left untreated, this condition can cause lesions on soft tissues, caused directly by tooth structures contacting tissue...rather than opposing teeth.
Bite Occlusion Analysis - Articulation Studies
With extensive use of articulation studies, impression models and diagnostic wax ups, Dr. Muslin was able to create and fabricate the prosthodontic components needed for establishing an occlusal relationship that was, in terms of basic physics, was normalized for our patients jaw structures and had the proper fit for her facial and smiling features.
Reversing Smile Collapse
Dr. Muslin's ability to raise the bite (increase vertical dimension) and create custom tooth replacement structures effectively moved the lower jaw (mandible) back into the position that reflected an optimal bite.
In turn, facial structures and lip support became normal again. The third photo reflects the significant change in the patient's jawbone relationships. She now has normal occlusion, normal operation and resting of the TM Joints and ... a very attractive profile....
Cosmetic Dental Face Lift
Our final picture shows the increased height of the vertical dimension and significant changes in lip support. The patient was very pleased with the outcome. She feels years younger, more attractive and can now eat just about anything she wants.
