Extreme Makeover Santa Monica Face Lift DentistryReconstructive Dental Facelifts
Meet Maya. She was a featured guest on our KTLA-TV Video Clip that describes the process of facelift dentistry that can be achieved with reconstructive and restorative dentistry.Maya had a number of dental issues that over the years caused her smile to collapse. Technically this is referred to a collapse of the vertical dimension. Missing teeth, compromised tooth structures, broken teeth and constant shifting of the occlusal relationship (bite and occlusion) caused a loss in certain dental structures that impacted her appearance and the ability to smile. As our preop before photo shows, the loss of normal upper lip movement has been lost. Although the patient is doing a good job of showing off a smile.... very little of her upper teeth are showing. Instead, more of the lower teeth are shown. This unusual smile behavior is more commonly seen with people who are generally older and have a longer history of worn down teeth, a natural phenomenon as we all grow older. In Maya's case, her broken and missing teeth, along with other compromised tooth structures accelerated the vertical dimension collapse. At the time Maya presented in our office, she stated that she had consulted with many dentists in the past but had not been able to find a treatment plan that would help her achieve her goal of having normal teeth that would correct the functional difficulties she had... along with having a great looking smile. As seen on the KTLA-TV Video Clip, she became very expressive with the TV Reporter when asked about her experience of having dental facelift procedures. Essentially, Dr. Muslin recommended procedures that would achieve the functional and cosmetic outcome she was looking for. Occlusal Relationship Analysis and Treatment
After obtaining a series of impressions that yielded the diagnostic models for articulation studies and for the wax up modeling process, Dr. Muslin determined that a combination of 100% Zirconium based bridges and premium porcelain crowns would recreate the normal bite relationship that is commensurate with her facial and jawbone structures. Temporaries were provided to the patient while the modeling and final adjustments were being completed. The patient's bite was normalized, establishing the physical properties required for TM Joint balance. Porcelain veneers were also used to supplement the final cosmetic outcome of her smile. Our postop after photo readily shows the patient's broader smile. Upper lip movement is now effortless, due to the new maxillary support provided through the reconstructive procedures. Smiling is no longer a conscious, applied effort. Notice how only a minimum of lower teeth show... indicating the lack of forced effort. The patient's vertical dimension was increased approximately 1/4 inch, having the net effect of making her face appear more normal and youthful. Cosmetically, the upper arch has a full complement of teeth that are matched in color, shading and size that is appropriate for her facial features. The patient was very pleased with the outcome. The facelift experience has impacted her in ways that go beyond just dentistry, which is easily seen in her after photo. Curious about the process of cosmetic dental facelifts?
