Reconstruction of certain physical properties of our smiles and overall dental condition have almost a magical effect in the creation of what is becoming known as the Cosmetic Dental Facelift.The integrity of everyone's teeth and normal jaw relationships (occlusion, bite, vertical dimension, occlusal relationship) changes as they age. It is a normal process and phenomenon that cannot be prevented from occuring. Individual teeth and groups of teeth undergo wear and tear as the years go on. Slowly and most certainly, unnoticeably, our vertical dimension collapses. The distance between the tip of the nose and the chin gets shorter and shorter. People who are teeth clenchers tend to experience this process at a faster pace. As the collapse continues, the lower jaw (mandible) will have compensatory movement outwards... constantly seeking a revised resting position. This forward shift of the mandible can become extreme and accentuate our appearance so significantly that we almost acquire a toothless, endentulous appearance. For some, speech patterns may even change. Needless to say, for people who do manage to lose teeth along the way... the collapse and jaw movement becomes more severe. 
Our young and attractive baby boomer, as seen in our first two preop before photos shows evidence of the tell tale signs of the collapse process. Smiling has become more of a conscious effort to show teeth. Upper lip support is diminishing. The resting position of the patient's mandible is beginning to show and create feelings of change.It was the desire of our patient to arrest this process treat these changes, recreating the physical properties of what was at one time his normal bite, occlusal relationship and TM Joint characteristics. He wanted to have a full broad smile that complemented his facial features with teeth that matched in color, shading, size and natural appearance. Dr. Muslin routinely uses the combination of articulation studies and wax up models that are generated from diagnostic plaster impressions of the patient's teeth and jaw structures. Technical analysis of current and optimized movements of the TM joints and overall occlusal relationships enable Dr. Muslin and his ceramist to create the dental components necessary for recreating a normalized bite. 
During this process, the patient, Dr. Muslin and the ceramist all confer to decide which cosmetic properties are to be included in the final fabrication of the porcelain components (crowns, veneers and onlays/inlays) that best suits the patient's vision of the final cosmetic result.Vertical Dimension RehabilitationOur third picture, with the patient's jaws in resting position, shows the dramatic differences in upper lip support, occlusal relationship and height between the maxilla and mandible (upper and lower jaw, respectively). The process of losing height has been reversed.Normal smile behavior has returned to a parafunctional (automatic) response... no conscious effort is needed. Upper lip movement returns to normalcy and shows off great looking teeth that are cosmetically balanced, producing a harmony that is so natural that the patient feels the new tooth structures are fully integrated into the experience of having a mouthful of natural teeth.
