Conscious Oral Sedation Dentistry - Santa MonicaDental anxiety affects just about everyone... it is primarily a matter of degree that makes us all anticipate and respond differently to the events, treatments, odors, sounds and other environmental stimuli in an average dental office.For some people it can be practically debilitating, which can cause them to forestall treatment... only to make their need for treatment more critical in the future. One of the most common issues many patients wrestle with is the gag reflex. Sedating medications help manage the natural tendency (autonomic response) to expel objects, such as bleaching tray impressions, as they are inserted in the mouth. 
Other patients may have little need for the different types of agents a dentist has available to help his/her patients feel as comfortable and relaxed as possible.Dental Anxiety or Relaxed Easy DentistryOur young patient in the adjacent photo didn't have any serious dental phobias or anxiety but still wanted to be relaxed, comfortable and not be overly conscious of every single event during her treatment.At the patients request, Dr. Muslin provided a combination of proven dental sedation agents including nitrous oxide and oral medications (small pills) that effortlessly created the atmosphere she was seeking. She was able to discuss a number of topics rationally throughout the treatment, yet feel totally relaxed with little or no perception of discomfort or mild pain. 
Our patient's treatment plan consisted of porcelain ceramics that would reshape our patient's anterior tooth structures and also produce some minor adjustment in her bite. She had a great smile and great looking teeth, but she didn't particularly like how her upper arch teeth had a slight angular relationship with her lower teeth.A specialized veneer product was requested by the patient that would add bulk to the incisal (biting edge) and biting surfaces of her teeth while simulataneously adding bulk that would create a more squared off appearance. 
Understandably... due to the amount of detail wanted by the patient, she wanted to be able to discuss certain stages of treatment and the fitting of temporary veneers... while they were being applied.The sedating medications facilitated the entire treatment program, allowing her to converse with Dr. Muslin about cosmetic details she particularly wanted. 
The extra efforts made by the patient produced the cosmetic result she was seeking. The ceramist was able to fabricate each and every veneer product with a grade of feldspathic porcelain that had the physical properties necessary for creating a unique veneer that has different thicknesses (bulk), in a tapering fashion.By looking closely at the absence of taper on the patient's teeth in her upper arch, as contrasted to the before treatment photo, the use of tapered veneers can recreate individual tooth structures that have a more natural appearance and have more cosmetic appeal. Dental sedation medications can be useful for almost everyone. While certainly the perfect solution for persons with varying degrees of dental anxiety or phobias, they can be useful also for patients who seek the ultimate in relaxation with the added benefit of being aware.... but conveniently not remembering every single detail of treatment.
